Sunny versions, enhanced Beatles/Bobby Hebb photo

Here's a new version of the famous photo that Brian Epstein, the Beatles manager, set up.
I believe this was in Memphis, Tennessee in 1966 backstage. The Beatles are asking Bobby Hebb for his autograph

Notice the tiles in the photos from August 19, 1966

That is most likely the day of the photo posted above.

One of my friends, Cameron McGraw, recently made me a mixed CD with a bunch of music on it that I might not normally listen to. The original Bobby Hebb version of "Sunny" was on that album, and I've found myself listening to it quite a bit. If you like this version (or even if you don't) you should give the original a listen too... it's great.

Anyway, this is my take on "Sunny." Hope you enjoy

Dance Remix of Sunny / Leonard Nimoy

http://lesterhein.com/umami-sunny-bobby-hebb-cover-version-coverversion-friday/

Umami – Sunny – Bobby Hebb cover version #coverversion Friday

This week’s cover is technically more of a remix, but it was so artfully and respectfully handled, that I just has to post it.

Umami is comprised of German Duo of Sam and Robert who put together a cracking rework of Bobby Hebb’s beautful acoustic soul record ‘Sunny’ which ranks very highly on my list of all time feel-good pop songs.

The Beatles and Bobby Hebb - February 6th is the Tribute Show at the Apollo Theater in NYC

IN THE NEWS

BEATLES TO BE HONORED AT
THE GRAMMY AWARDS

http://music.yahoo.com/news/beatles-kristofferson-honored-life-39-034653068.html
The ceremony was the first of several celebrations of the surviving Beatles, Starr and McCartney, the latter of whom was unable to make the ceremony because of Grammy Awards rehearsals. The two will appear on the telecast Sunday night and will be the subject of a star-studded television special taped Monday to air on Feb. 9, the 50th anniversary of the Beatles' first performance in the U.S.
Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison, the widows of Beatles John Lennon and George Harrison, accepted the honors Saturday for their late husbands, and Starr used Ono's long speech as an opportunity to play to the crowd. He took out his cellphone early in her remarks and pretended to take a call, then leaned in to try to get her attention sometime later.
Starr lamented not writing down his thoughts beforehand but kept the crowd laughing before turning serious: "The Beatles' music is still out there, and that's the thing I'm most proud of."

Stephen Malkmus of PAVEMENT on Kiss, the Milwaukee Bucks, and his first punk song

http://www.avclub.com/article/stephen-malkmus-on-kiss-the-milwaukee-bucks-and-hi-200922

The first song he learned to play on guitarSM: Well, there’s “Smoke On The Water,” but I don’t know if I knew all the parts to it. I think I just knew the riff. “Susie Q” was one of the first sort of sophisticated songs I ever learned by Creedence, so I would say that.
The most sophisticated early song I ever learned—which was not the first song, but the most sophisticated song I learned—was “Something” by The Beatles. It has a lot of diminished chords in it and a coffeehouse troubadour from Stockton taught me that. He taught me “Sunny,” also, by Bobby Hebb, and some Jim Croce.

(EDITOR'S NOTE: Both Frank Sinatra and Shirley Bassey did "Sunny" and "Something."
Bobby's daughter, Kitoto Von Hebb, will be performing those songs in concert on Feb. 6, at the Apollo Theater in NYC)

Review: Mixtape Rewind brings 90s back to Dubai

2nd concert dedicated to music from past decades is a hit
  • By David Tusing, Deputy tabloid! Editor
  • Published: 16:18 January 18, 2014
But when it comes to super duper hits that still have the power to get people on their feet dancing, the credit has to go to Boney M. Led by original band member Maizie Williams, the four-piece picked it up with Sunny, their hit cover of the Bobby Hebb song. And then, from the Caribbean-esque Hooray! Hooray! It’s a Holi-Holiday to Daddy Cool and the West Indian song Brown Girl in the Ring and that ode to the Russian mystic, Rasputin, it was all groove all the way. Until, alas, the sound problem abruptly cut them off.
Unfazed, Williams led a beautiful rendition of the classic Rivers of Babylon, by far the most well-received song of the night. They ended their set, aptly, with Gotta Go Home.

LEONARD NIMOY'S COVER OF 'SUNNY' IN THE SOUNDTRACK TO THE FILM 'BLIND'

VARIETY REPORTS:
http://variety.com/2014/film/reviews/sundance-film-review-blind-1201063430/

Much as “Reprise” was stuffed with overachieving references to Proust, Maurice Blanchot and the untranslated Norwegian poet Tor Ulven, “Blind,” too, runs thick with eccentric pop-culture ephemera, from the obscure 1970 Norwegian omnibus film “Days From 1000 Years” to a running discussion of Leonard Nimoy as actor, photographer and chanteur (his cover of Bobby Hebb’s “Sunny” is heard on the soundtrack).

Well-known tracks by Big Star (“September Gurls”), Bobby Hebb (“Sunny”), Big Maybelle (“One Monkey Don’t Stop No Show”), John Hartford (“Up on the Hill Where They Do the Boogie”), and Bob Dylan (“I Threw It All Away,” from Nashville Skyline) sit alongside obscurities like Connie Smith’s long-unreleased “Haunted Heart” and a pair of largely forgotten R&B singles from Sun Records, Rosco Gordon’s “Shoobie Oobie” and the Prisonaires’ “Just Walkin’ in the Rain.” A bunch of other big names are here, too—Kris Kristofferson, Elvis Presley, B.B. King, Isaac Hayes, Al Green, Emmylou Harris, Otis Redding, Ann Peebles, Charlie Rich, Dolly Parton, Buddy and Julie Miller, Johnny Cash—as well as less-famous notables Jim Dickinson, Sid Selvidge, Sleepy John Estes, O.V. All you need is love: 50 years later, we’re still infatuated with The Beatles

There was no problem being able to see the four adorable English musicians on the playing field stage from any vantage point of the stadium. Concert tickets ranged from $3 for the top-most upper deck seats to $5 for lower deck ones. My girlfriends and I had paid $5 for third-base area seating.
There was no dilemma in hearing the music of The Remains (“Diddy Wah Diddy”), Bobby Hebb (“Sunny”), The Cyrkle (“Red Rubber Ball”) and The Ronettes (“Be My Baby”).
But, when The Beatles finally took the stage as 1960s-era cameras flashed, there was a major problem. My personal experience and news accounts, too, attest that one just couldn’t hear.

Kitoto Von Hebb, Lulu, Dionne Warwick, Mary Wilson, Lulu, Barbara Harris and Margaret Ross Williams all Legendary Singing Starlets added to Apollo Concert Feb. 6

For Immediate Release:

Kitoto Von Hebb  / Bobby Hebb EP to be released on February 6 at the Apollo Theater

First release from Bobby Hebb / Sunny boxed set due on Feb. 6

_____________________________________

"TWIST & SHOUT: New York Celebrate The Beatles" at the legendary Apollo Theater, has announced the addition of Dionne Warwick, Mary Wilson (Supremes), Lulu, Barbara Harris (The Toys) and Margaret Ross WiIliams (The Toys) to the Thursday, February 6 star-studded charity concert being held as part of "NYC FAB 50: Celebrating the Music of The Beatles" 50th Anniversary Celebration. Tickets now on sale through Ticketmaster, ranging from $20-150.00.

Dionne Warwick, five-time Grammy Award winning music legend and a 2014 Grammy Award nominee once again, has been a conerstone of American pop music & culture. Dionne's career, which spans more than 50 years, has established her as an International music icon and concert act. She has earned more than sixty charted hit songs and sold over 100 million records, including more than 18 consecutive Top 100 singles. A friend to The Beatles in the 60's, Warwick was part of some of the most famous fund-raising musical events in history, including “We Are the World,”"Live Aid” and “That’s What Friends Are For.” She became a United Nations Global Ambassador for the Food and Agriculture Organization, and a U.S. Ambassador of Health.

Mary  Wilson is a founding member of the world’s most famous female trio THE SUPREMES, who recorded twelve #1 hits from 1964 to 1969. Back in 1964 the Supremes' “Where Did Our Love Go” reached #1 in the U.S. pop charts, and they released four more number one hits, “Baby Love,” “Come See About Me,” “Stop In the Name of Love,” and “Back in My Arms Again,” making them the only group to have five consecutive #1 hits. The legendary singer’s career did not stop there, and she continues to soar to untold heights. Mary is a best-selling author, motivational speaker, businesswoman, former U.S. Cultural Ambassador, the recipient of an Associate Degree from New York University in 2001, and an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Paine College in Augusta, Georgia. In 1988, Mary Wilson accepted the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of the Supremes when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 1994, the Supremes received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in 1998 they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.

Lulu is in her fifth decade entertaining, and the Scottish dynamo has put her unmistakable stamp on some of the soul songs that meant the most to her with a new album executive produced by Sir Elton John. Lulu, who had hits in the 60s with “Shout” and “To Sir With Love,” has recorded landmark songs originally recorded by the artists who helped to write the dictionary of soul. “Shout,” Lulu’s debut hit in 1964, first charted for the Isley Brothers in the US in 1959 and then again in 1962, while “‘To Sir With Love” entered the Billboard Hot 100 in the same week in 1967 as Sam & Dave’s “Soul Man,” and a few weeks later kept it off the No.1 spot.

Margaret Ross Williams is the lead singer of the legendary girl group THE COOKIES. Margaret Ross Williams sang lead on many classics. The Cookies scored their biggest hits with the King/Goffen-penned "Don't Say Nothin Bad About My Baby" and "Chains." "Chains" was covered by The Beatles. Formed in Brooklyn in the 50s, The Cookies were a staple of the Brill Building. Aside from their close association with Carole King & Gerry Goffen, they sang on such hits as Neil Sedaka's "Breaking Up is Hard to Do," Little Eva's "The Locomotion" & many others. Photo is with Carole King.
Barbara Harris of The TOYS - In September of 1965 a record was released on the DynaVoice label that was to become an international, all-time classic. "A Lovers Concerto" by "The Toys" entered the charts and in just six short weeks surpassed the likes of The Beatles, Supremes, Elvis Presley, Rolling Stones, Four Tops, Stevie Wonder, etc. The song reached reached #1 and sold millions. The voice singing lead was that of Barbara Harris, and she sounds just as great today as she did half a decade ago.

Kitoto Von Hebb, the daughter of two musical parents, one being "Sunny" author/singer Bobby Hebb, is from a family with deep and impressive musical roots. Her great uncle, Harold "Hal" Hebb was a member of the Marigolds, the group that performed for Elvis Presley at the Governor's Mansion in Tennessee. Bobby Hebb toured with The Beatles and was a friend of theirs. His biggest hit, "Sunny," was recorded in New York City. Released as a single, it reached #3 on the R&B charts, #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, sold over one million copies and was awarded a gold disc. When Hebb toured with The Beatles in 1966, "Sunny" was, at the time of the tour, ranked higher than any Beatles song then on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. BMI rated "Sunny" number 25 in its "Top 100 songs of the century."

Also on the bill are

Lloyd Price, a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame artist, is one of the legends and pioneers of rock & roll. He is known worldwide for his hits "Personality," "Stagger Lee" and "Lawdy Miss Clawdy." “Lawdy Miss Clawdy” topped the R&B charts for seven weeks and was covered by the likes of Elvis Presley (who performed it on his 1968 NBC-TV special), John Lennon and Elvis Costello.
Bettye LaVette is a Grammy Award nominee who has performed at the Kennedy Center Honors and is heralded for re-inventing songs from the British bands who were initially influenced by American R & B music. She joined Todd Rundgren, Patti Austin and others for a Hollywood Bowl concert dedicated to The Beatles, and has thrilled audiences at the annual John Lennon charity tribute concert held in New York.

Gary U.S. Bonds is an honoree of the Rhythm & Blues Foundation, a “favorite son” of the Blues Brothers and his classic recording “Quarter to Three" appears on The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's "500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll" list. His first hit was “New Orleans” and he teamed with Bruce Springsteen for his comeback hit “This Little Girl.” The Beatles backed Bonds on an early European tour, but were actually fired from the tour.

Melvin Van Peebles is the ultimate Renaissance man: actor, director, screenwriter, playwright, novelist, visual artist and composer. Best known as a revolutionary film-maker (and to younger movie-goers as the father of Mario Van Peebles), his music has run the gamete from soul, funk, jazz rap and improvisational. An album released on The Beatles U.S. label, Capitol, was described as “filled with stylistic curveballs, Broadway-like compositions, and his animated verbal delivery.”

Barrence Whitfield is a Boston-based, internationally-followed R & B vocal powerhouse best known for his live concerts as the front-man in Barrence Whitfield & the Savages. Delivering soul, blues, funk, roots, jump and even rockabilly, Barrence has been described as "a soul screamer in the spirit of Little Richard, Wilson Pickett, Solomon Burke. Anyone who can be compared to one of The Beatles' greatest influences, Little Richard, is a singer who had to be part of this tribute.

Roseanna Vitro is the Grammy-nominated vocal stylist and reigning member of the jazz community who has served as an official Jazz Ambassador sponsored in 2009 by Jazz at Lincoln Center and the U.S. State Dept, and in 2004 by the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. She was inducted in the Arkansas Jazz Hall of Fame.

Franke Previte is the Musical Director for the concert under the supervision of Producer Dennis D'Amico. Franke won an Academy Award for best Achievement in Music; Best Song for Dirty Dancing's "(I've Had) The Time of My Life, and has sold over 50 million records. He is the leader of The Brotherhood," a band of master musicians performing for the Apollo audience of "Twist & Shout: New York Celebrates The Beatles." Pianist for The Brotherhood is Roger Kellaway, a jazz/pop/classical pianist & composer who has worked with everyone from Elvis to Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie to Yo-Yo Ma, Joni Mitchell to Mancini and Quincy Jones to Michael Tilson Thomas. His discography runs more than two hundred and fifty albums. Kellaway’s most prized composer credit, “Remembering You,” is the closing theme for the TV’s “All in the Family.” He has written (and conducted) twenty-nine film scores including Barbara Streisand’s “A Star is Born,” for which he received an Academy Award nomination. Roger’s most recent commission, a twenty-two minute piece for two pianos, bass & drums, is a jazz exploration of nine songs by Sir Paul McCartney.

The Apollo Theater at 253 West 125th Street, is one of the most famous live music venues in the world, and even hosted a memorable Paul McCartney concert in December of 2010.

100% of net proceeds from ticket sales benefit the Food Bank for New York City. Artists subject to change. The production is not affiliated with Apple Corp Ltd or The Beatles.

TIM GHIANNI writes about Bobby Hebb / Eugen Cicero "Sunny", Oscar Peterson, Luisa Casali

TIM GHIANNI on his friendship with Bobby Hebb

"We're in the university of life and last time I checked, no one is in a hurry to graduate."

Perhaps the gentlest soul I’ve ever met in the years I’ve been privileged to interview musicians, Bobby Hebb looked up at me and smiled when he said that.

I quickly scribbled that down in my now unreadable reporter’s notebook, took a long deep sip of the Scandinavian roast coffee that he’d prepared.

“I think you’ll like this,” he had said, urging me to go ahead and try his formula for boosting the coffee’s spirit-lifting taste, attitude even.

Hebb spooned some brown sugar into my cup and poured in some real cream, not of the low fat variety – for he was only 5-foot-6 and 130 pounds – and we looked out the back door of his tidy home in Bordeaux.

“It’s nice to be back home,” he said, before leading the way back to the living room/dining room/family room combination that was filled with the tools with which he served humanity.
There was a baby grand, some guitars, a keyboard.

“Listen to this,” he said, walking over to the stereo near the front window. He put a CD in the changer, let it load up and then pushed play.

The song that was Hebb’s greatest gift to the world – one composed of his own despair, alone in a New York apartment – softly escalates in volume, gradually filling the room. Bobby’s eyes glisten with soft tears of joy.

“This is my favorite version,” he says as a very different – though still oh-so-familiar – version of Bobby’s classic, “Sunny,” escapes from the speakers.

“This is Eugen Cicero,” he says, softly, so as not to interrupt this music. For the next seven minutes or so, the living room in Bordeaux is filled with the European pianist’s version of “Sunny.”

It’s all instrumental – although in this listener’s mind, the lyrics are ever-present – and is deceptively simple: piano with upright bass backing. While exploring ”Sunny” in a way that would have made Bobby’s old friend Thelonious Monk proud, Cicero offers up doses of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata and Chopin's Polonaise in A-Flat Major.

We sip our brown-sugar-hinted, almost espresso, and listen. Neither of us wants to speak, as Bobby’s eyes dance, his denim-clad leg bounces oh-so-slightly to the beat.
