The focus of the competition is, according to organizer Jörg Künzl the concert games, folk music would not listen. It stood in each category several pieces to choose from. The compulsory repertoire ranges from "Brummi Variations" for the youngest participants about "native dances for Bayan" to Bach's "Prelude and Fugue" for older soloists.

Im Mittelpunkt des Wettbewerbs steht nach Angaben von Organisator Jörg Künzl das konzertante Spielen, Volksmusik würde man nicht hören. Es stünden in jeder Kategorie mehrere Stücke zur Auswahl. Das Pflichtrepertoire reicht von "Brummi-Variationen" für die jüngsten Teilnehmer über "Indianische Tänze für Bajan" bis zu Bachs "Präludium und Fuge" für ältere Solisten.

Nicht nur auf dem Akkordeon, sondern auch auf dem Bandoneon wird gespielt.

Auch Unterhaltungsmusik steht auf dem Vorspielprogramm, zum Beispiel "Sunny" von Bobby Hebb, "Blue Moon" von Richard Rodgers und "Michelle" von John Lennon und Paul McCartney. In der Königsklasse gibt es Künzl zufolge eine Besonderheit, die es in keinem anderen vergleichbaren Wettbewerb gibt: Im Finale muss jeder der besten vier Solisten gemeinsam mit der Vogtland Philharmonie Greiz/Reichenbach ein Stück des finnischen Komponisten Timo-Juhani Kyllönen spielen.

Bewertet werden die Wettbewerbsteilnehmer von einer Jury aus 18 internationalen Künstlern, Musikpädagogen und Musikwissenschaftlern. Die ersten drei Gewinner in jeder Kategorie erhalten jeweils zwischen 500 und 3.500 Euro Preisgeld.

We could have gone in other directions. There was "Good Day Sunshine," "Here Comes the Sun" and "I'll Follow the Sun" by the Beatles. Or "Don't Let the  Sun Go Down on Me" by Elton John. "Aquarius/Let The Sunshine in" by the Fifth Dimension. "House of the Rising Sun" by the Animals. We won't spoil the mood by bringing up "Seasons in the Sun" by Terry Jacks. But "Sundown" by Gordon Lightfoot would work, as would "Sunny" by Bobby Hebb. Norah Jones sang about "Sunrise."  Cream did "Sunshine of Your Love." "Tequila Sunrise" might be appropriate for some.
And before our music writer Bob Mehr calls us about possible gimmick infringement, we'll close this with Stevie Wonder's "You are the Sunshine of My Life."
