FOUR TOPS YESTERDAY'S DREAMS featuring "SUNNY" by Bobby Hebb

From AllMusic.com
Even the unavoidable covers are treated very well; Hunter and Frank Wilson altered "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," "Sunny," and even "Daydream Believer" to sound more natural next to a real Motown song like "Remember When." If it never hit the chart heights of 1967's Reach Out, Yesterday's Dreams still proved more of a solid listen.

Review by

A good catch if you can find a copy lying around a Goodwill or flea market, Motown surrounds three hits -- "7 Rooms of Gloom," "Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever," and "Standing in the Shadows of Love" -- with nine selections that were either B-sides or album dwellers, including Raynard Miner's "The Key," two Hal David and Burt Bacharach songs, the Doors' "Light My Fire," and Bobby Hebb's "Sunny."

The "live" version from the 4 Tops is missing in action on YouTube

Yesterday's Dreams was the eighth Motown album release from the Four Tops, 1968, including a "Greatest Hits" and a "live" disc.

Someone removed the Four Tops LIVE performing "SUNNY' on YouTube but we have it saved on DVD.

Motown artists have performed multiple versions of "Sunny" which makes for a unique story.  All versions are completely different recordings - Four Tops (studio and live,) Stevie Wonder (studio and live,) Marvin Gaye (studio and multiple remixes of same,) and Mary Wells (on Jubilee Records after she left Motown.)  Wilson Pickett's version straddles both Motown and the Buddy Miles / Electric Flag version so it is tangentially related to the Motown renditions of "SUNNY"

Four Tops version appeared on Yesterday's Dreams, was the flip of the Netherlands 45 RPM "Daydream Believer" and was put on a now rare Best of FOUR TOPS HITS OF GOLD

The Motown material will be discussed in the boxed set liner notes.
