Bobby Hebb Daily Mail article / U.K.

It’s interesting to compare the staid, probably lip-synced and homogenized version of Bobby Hebb’s great song, Sonny (at this link) and the far funkier treatment Hebb and Ron Carter give it in the video above. The earlier version is the more familiar one, of course. In that era, great talents often had to tone it down to get television time.
An interesting passage from Wikipedia’s profile of Hebb and the fate of his older brother:

After a break of exactly twenty minutes the men were sent by the stage manager Carolin Wobben, which naturally chaotic Italian approach with Deutsche Gründlichkeit in the right direction manages to lead again. With an instrumental version of Bobby Hebb's classic "Sunny" The second set was started, followed by "Is not No Sunshine", especially for an old visitor. Violent boogiënd came to an end this second set, and of course an encore could not be avoided. This was "Purple Rain", a song that exist on the setlist of many a blues band is reflected.
Both sets of men lasted about five minutes and a total of fifteen songs come on you all fairly drawn drawings without the otherwise bored even a moment.

But the fact that the Big Band not only can classic, she proved already to the next song - Michael Bublé's "Everything". Solo singer Franziska Steinheuer in red dress stood out not only visually. In addition to this modern swing song she proved her musical range also with the title song for the James Bond film "Skyfall" by Adele Adkins.

As an orchestral musician in the orchestra broke four times out as a jazz quartet from the group. Noel Uhlemann on trumpet, Peter Richter on guitar, Lukas Zimmer on drums and teachers Löbens gave at the piano, among other things, Bobby Hebb's "Sunny".

12 are directly from his classic album Soul in His Music, Music in His Soul, including the composition "My Best Friend" from one of his original guitar players, Bobby Hebb of "Sunny" fame. The lyrics are slightly modified from Hebb's, the uptempo tale a good stylistic switch from the bulk of Shelton's work here. DJ John Richbourg's production, possibly assisted by songwriter Allen Orange, is crystal clear and certainly helped build the rhythms, with each instrument placed perfectly in the mix.

This song was written by Bobby Hebb, author of "Sunny" for his friend Jimmy Church. It was produced by Mickey Baker of Mickey & Sylvia fame. Bobby Hebb replaced Mickey Baker and the duo Mickey & Sylvia became Bobby & Sylvia and they signed to Battle Records. There are some great session people on this recording. Jimmy Church did an interview on Visual Radio with Joe Viglione on July 5, 2012 and talked about this song. That interview is up on You Tube.

The plethora of info concerning this fantastic track is greatly appreciated. Thanks, gentlemen.

Mickey Baker (who plays on a couple of the Bell Notes' songs) and King Curtis are heard as sessionmen on some tracks, though these are far from their more notable credits; Curtis, in fact, fronted the studio band O.C. & the Holidays, and both sides of an instrumental 1958 single they did for Warner are here. Three of the songs on the CD (two of them by Jimmy Church, one by the Genies) were previously unissued. ~ Richie Unterberger
