TMR Zoo tribute to Hal Hebb

On August 3, 2010 we lost Bobby Hebb, co- author of a song that won a Grammy for vocalist Lou Rawls entitled “A Natural Man”, and singer/performer of a song on the Grammy winning album Night Train To Nashville, the modern pop classic “Sunny”.

Some say “Sunny” was written by Bobby Hebb for God, other reviews of the song claim it was for one particular woman, while still others reference the loss of Bobby’s older brother, Hal Hebb, on November 23, 1963, as a catalyst for one of the greatest songs in the history of popular music. On August 26, 1995, Bobby appeared on my television program, Visual Radio, and gave a clear description of how he wrote his masterpiece:

“I find it more psychological the way I was thinking…it’s your disposition…you need a lift, an up, that’s all. Sometimes everyone needs an up. So “Sunny”, to me, is that disposition, you need a Sunny disposition to get away from whatever, just as I said before, “amuse me”, “make me forget what I just saw man”, “I don’t wanna know, I know I have to know, but I don’t know how to deal with it right now. I will deal with it, I’m not running away from this. I just need a break.”

So this was the idea behind “Sunny” – (it) was (to) give me a brighter idea so that my emotions will not be as disturbed as they are. I need a calmer feeling so that I can balance myself and adjust and then continue forward, onward.”

That Hal Hebb, a member of Johnny Bragg’s group, The Marigolds, who hit the R & B Top 10 with “Rollin’ Stone”, means that he and his younger brother, Bobby, both performed on the Excello Label. But more than that, Hal was definitely young Bobby’s mentor, performing with Bobby on his third birthday at the Bijou Theater on the Jerry Jackson Revue of 1942. In 2001 Hal got some of his due, being referenced in the book “Just Walkin’ In The Rain: The True Story of the Prisonaires by Jay Warner (a six time Grammy Award winning music publisher and writer) on Renaissance Books. This writer conducted an interview with Warner upon the book’s release and got deeper into Hal and Bobby’s references in the author’s work.

As I write this, on November 23, 2010, I’m listening to transfers of performances of “Sunny” that Bobby recorded with me on August 26, 1995 as well as two renditions taped in May of 1998, right after the passing of Frank Sinatra, who also recorded the song (with Duke Ellington!). That Hal Hebb was an inspiration to and for Bobby, there’s no question, the influence of the older brother as an entertainer certainly helped pave the path for Bobby Hebb. Bobby was working on a song entitled “Low Tide” which he abruptly abandoned…the reason I gathered was that Bobby wanted to stay on the bright side of things. Interesting that in July of 2010 author James Sullivan would reference “low tide” in a piece on the song “Sunny” stating: “. ‘Sunny’ was a pop prayer for a better day, after a yesterday “filled with rain.” The gorgeous tune, which borrowed from Hebb’s jazz training in the Navy, his youthful stint as one of the first black performers on the Grand Ole Opry and his smooth-soul recording experience, appealed to listeners across the board. Initially turned down by every publisher he approached, the song would chart high on the country and R&B charts, reaching US No. 2 pop in the summer of 1966.”

The song “Sunny” actually hit #1 in Cashbox and I personally question Billboard keeping it at number two, especially with the memory of how Billboard Magazine tucked The Bee Gees April 1979 single, “Love You Inside Out” conveniently at #1 when CashBox and Record World had it at #2 – if memory serves – it gave The Bee Gees six #1 hits in a row.
Billboard Magazine is a tremendous resource and a wonderful “authority”, however, it is not infallible…keep in mind, the timeless “Louie Louie” was kept out of #1 by The Singing Nun (two songs, “Louie Louie” and “Dominique” which probably cost less than $100.00 to record combined!)

If any song deserved the #1 spot it was and is “Sunny”. Bobby toured with The Beatles that summer as well as with the Jeff Beck / Jimmy Page Yardbirds that same year, 1966, and the response to the rendition of “Sunny” Bobby performed with Barry & The Remains in Toronto on a bill with The Beatles August 17, 1966, which I listened to again this morning, has applause that is at the same level the Beatles themselves received onstage at that event.

Sullivan’s reference to “Just Walkin’ In The Rain”, the Johnny Bragg tune that Hal Hebb sang as a member of The Sunbeams and The Marigolds (who were Bragg’s band following the group that originally hit with “Just Walkin’ In The Rain”, The Prisonaires) is most interesting…Bobby Hebb’s “Sunny” seems to be the other side of the coin to “Just Walkin’ In The Rain”, along with the fact that it was on the label that pressed up Elvis Presley recordings, Sun Records. So let’s say that Sun Records and the reverse of “Just Walkin’ In The Rain” and sunny names for the older Hebb’s bands, The Sunbeams and The Marigolds, inspired Bobby, consciously or unconsciously, it’s wonderful to at least go back and try to discover the threads that helped form this magnificent tapestry that is both the music of Hal Hebb and Bobby Hebb, and the huge international smash “Sunny” itself.

James Sullivan again gives a good reflection in his piece of July 9, 2010, published just about a month prior to Bobby’s passing: “But just as his career was taking off, Hebb’s brother was killed. For months after the incident, “times were at a low tide,” the singer has said. Inspired by ‘Just Walkin’ in the Rain,’ he finally decided to write about the gradual emergence of the human spirit after tragedy.”

Bobby told me that he immersed himself in Gerald Wilson’s You Better Believe it album as a comfort during this great time of sorrow. Wilson’s disc is a textbook that I believe inspired the Pink Panther theme from Henry Mancini (“Sunny” itself including a sly nod to the James Bond Theme just after Bobby sings “Sunny, one so true, I love you” in the song).

Three years after “Sunny” hit in 1966 the group Classics IV had a huge smash with a song giving the flip side answer, “Stormy”. The influence of “Sunny” upon “Stormy” is undeniable – just listen to the mood and the bass line, with Dennis Yost’s Classics IV also recording “Sunny”. The two songs are paired on at least a couple of Classics IV greatest hits packages. So the songs all come full circle, the inspiration inspiring the inspired which, in turn, inspires some more. It certainly will continue for years to come and hopefully this little tribute to one of the influences, Hal Hebb, will be the start of your score card for the more wonderful music yet to come.

Years after Bobby responded to “Just Walkin’ In The Rain” on Sun Records with “Sunny” on the Dutch electronics’ company Philips Records label (what an interesting coincidence since the owner of Sun Records was Sam Phillips – with two l’s instead of one ), we have all these elements that contributed to the creation of a pop masterpiece enjoyed by millions and millions of people on this quickly spinning planet. Johnny Bragg, Sun Records, Gerald Wilson and…Hal Hebb.

Today is the 47th anniversary of the passing of Hal Hebb. You’ll find him listed on the credits of such compilations as “Vocal Groups: Classic Doo Wop or Street Corner Essentials as well as Excello Story Part II 1955-1957; you’ll find him in Jay Warner’s book American Singing Groups: a history from 1940s to today (page 281) – as Jay writes “Bragg formed a new Prisonaires renamed the Sunbeams that included Hal Hebb (brother of Bobby Hebb)…In 1955 the Sunbeams became the Marigolds and recorded in Nashville for Excello Records. The Excello released “Rollin’ Stone” became a number eight R & B hit…

Not as famous as his brother, certainly not as famous as John F. Kennedy (though their two names sometimes get referenced together because of their passing at almost the same point in time), but a man who did perform on a genuine Top 10 hit himself, and who deserves a lot of credit for helping to nurture the musical skills of his younger brother Bobby. Without Theo van Gogh his older brother Vincent might have not had as easy a time putting paint to canvas. Without Hal Hebb would the world be as “Sunny” ?

And he scored a Top 40 hit with a pop/rock arrangement of "Music to Watch Girls By," the tune that originated on a Diet Pepsi commercial and had been an instrumental hit for the Bob Crewe Generation. At a time when non-rock pop singers were beginning to be marginalized, Williams successfully threaded the needle, reassuring his older listeners while proving adaptable to current trends.

Bobby Hebb's "Sunny" gets a superior treatment. Where Dusty Springfield had orchestration which hinted at the James Bond theme, Ralph Carmichael pushes the orchestra to the limit and this jazz/swing version dances around the nuances of Hebb's composition, the piano dominant with the big band following Roger Williams' lead. Hebb has stated that he's recorded it twice and (outside of live versions) he doesn't want to perform it a third time, but some hip producer could always sample his voice and slip it over this stunning rendition for a few cameo appearances. The song is timeless, and this instrumental in the right film could bring the Born Free album by Roger Williams back into the charts.

Nach einer kurzen Umziehpause zeigt Esther – nun im sexy Minikleid und High Heels Stiefel – mit ihrer Band ihren eigenen Style; Ridstyle eben. Authentisch und mit beeindruckender Stimme überzeugt sie mit teilweise rockigen und poppigen Elementen und deutschen Texten. Zwischendurch unternimmt sie Ausflüge in vergangene Zeiten mit Titeln wie „Sunny” (Bobby Hebb) und „What a difference a day makes” (Dinah Washington). Höhepunkt war dann die Premiere einer deutschen Version des Winehouse-Titels „You know I’m no good”. Am Ende schafft sie es, dass alles tanzt und singt: „Du liebst mich, ich lieb dich”.

With his wife, Valerie Simpson, he crafted such memorable tunes as "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" for Diana Ross, "You're All I Need to Get By" from Marvin Gaye & Tami Terrell, "Let's Go Get Stoned" - a huge hit for Ray Charles but a signature tune as well for Joe Cocker - who performed it at Woodstock, Ashford & Simpson's own big Top 12 hit (#1 R & B) "Solid" and so many others. Ashford & Simpson produced and wrote and sang backing vocals on "Remember Me", a superb Diana Ross hit that doesn't get nearly enough airplay as an oldie.

Humble Pie took "I Don't Need No Doctor" from a Nick Ashford solo 45 PM on Verve Records and made it the centerpiece of their live lp HJMBLE PIE PERFORMANCE ROCKIN' THE FILLMORE in 1973 and was a huge FM smash.

Nick Ashford, half of the Motown songwriting duo Ashford & Simpson that penned elegant, soulful classics for singers Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye and funk hits for Chaka Khan and others, died Monday, his former publicist said. He was 70.

Ashford, who along with wife Valerie Simpson wrote some of Motown's biggest hits, died in a New York City hospital, said publicist and longtime friend Liz Rosenberg. He had throat cancer.

It goes without saying that at 8:38 PM EDT this evening, we are sad, shocked and feel a terrible loss over our friend Bobby Hebb... a true "gentleman", a musical genius and giant, and just a wonderful human being.

We're working on an essay to express how this man's creativity touched millions and millions of people around the world.

Bobby passed away at 10:50 AM this morning, Central time.

His 72nd birthday was last week. We got to speak on the phone.

Bobby was happy to receive a number of birthday wishes from people who were at the Haverhill, Massachusetts TV station who signed a birthday card/note for him. Bobby enjoyed many Happy Birthday wishes last week, and passed on eight days later. Thanks to everyone who wrote to him and those of you who keep him in your prayers and thoughts.

He was a friend to everyone who knew him...

One of the first recordings featuring Bobby Hebb on guitar. We won this recording on eBay on
June 14, 2009 This may have been Bobby's second session after working with Poppa John Gordy and happened at the Chess Studios in Chicago.

Here's another great Poppa John Gordy release on Bullet. "Over The Waves" b/w "Salty Dog Rag" appeared before the two singles that we have which Bobby appears on; we picked it up for the historic value. The singles that followed were Bobby's first recording sessions.

Bobby & Shelby Singleton worked together at the Philips label. Here's a Shelby Singleton production/release (Producer Howard N. Lovdal) for Minaret Records. From the eBay posting: The New Lime – “Sunny” b/w “Same” (Minaret 150). The New Lime were one of the biggest bands in SW Ohio and northern Kentucky for years. Originally formed in 1962 as the Savoys the group changed their name in 1965 when they cut a record for Fraternity Records (The Savoys was a name already being used by another group). They recorded for Counterpoint (a subsidiary of Fraternity) but during 1968 the group recorded this one release, a cover of the Bobby Hebb song, for the small Nashville based Minaret label. Record is a DJ copy in M- condition (has a date 11/4/69 written on each label).

It was the summer of 1966, and the Beatles were making what was to be their last North American tour. As the "Fab Four" made their way across the United States, they took a quick detour north into Canada—Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens to be exact—for a concert on August 17. Among the 16,000 or so fans in attendance that day was a corporate attorney from Ontario, who packed his family and a battery operated, UHER 4000 REPORT-L reel-to-reel tape machine to watch … and record … the last appearance of John, Paul, George, and Ringo in Canada.

Offered is an amateur recording—a previously unknown audio example of the Toronto show—that amounts to a 2 hour and 20 minute documentary detailing one family's experience at the final concert appearance of the Beatles in Canada. And "detail" is the name of the game here, as the tape begins with its narrator introducing his family to an unseen audience as they drive to the venue. The family spent the first few minutes discussing what they think the concert will be like, with succinct and sometimes prophetic observations offered, as well as checks on the time, weather conditions, and the overall pre-concert atmosphere. The sound of the crowd, traffic, program vendors … it's all here. The original owner can be heard later in the tape spending his time interviewing anxious fans anticipating the appearance of the Beatles.

The opening acts are here: The Remains, Bobby Hebb, The Cyrkie, The Ronettes (including "Be My Baby"). After a false alarm (a stagehand came onstage to adjust the drum set causing some young fans to faint), the stadium announcer utters the words everyone had been waiting to hear: " … the BEATLES!"

The immediate response from thousands of screaming, ecstatic fans is overwhelming. After some fine-tuning of their instruments by Lennon and Harrison, the band can be heard launching into "Rock and Roll Music." Every note of the Beatles' ten-song concert was captured on a 1/4"-tape, with the lead song followed by "She's A Woman," "If I Needed Someone," "Day Tripper," "Baby's in Black," "I Feel Fine," "Yesterday," "I Wanna Be You Man," "Nowhere Man," and "Paperback Writer."

After the show, the would-be newsman leaves the stadium and, along the way, inquires of the hoarse fans why they came to the show and what they thought of the concert. With this running commentary, he makes his way outside in the hope of catching the Beatles on their way out. But alas, the Beatles had already left the building.

Too often, perhaps, the phrase "one of a kind" is used when referring to collectibles. Without hesitation, Mastro Auctions proudly affixes that title to this lot. Although the original audiotape is the true gem here (in its box with a vintage label affixed to the spool reads "Beatles #112 / Aug 66 / Maple Leafs Toronto"), this remarkable find also includes the original reel-to-reel tape machine (with its case) used to give a blow-by-blow account of the concert. A

CD-R with samples of the original recording accompanies. The tape player has not been used in a number of years, though its very existence, and that of the original recording, is a true piece of Rock & Roll history.

Accompanying as provenance is a typed letter from the son of the original owner, the original sales receipt from the day his son sold it to a private collector, and a typed, detailed description of the tape's content.

With the advent of quality digital music editing for home computers, the past few years have seen renewed
interest in amateur audience recordings of live Beatles concerts. Improved sound quality, lower generation
copies of familiar shows (Candlestick Park 8. 29. 66, Seattle Coliseum 8. 21. 64) are circulating and several
tapes long thought to exist (Mid-South Coliseum, Memphis 8.19. 66 - both shows) have suddenly appeared.

Tony Barrow’s cassette of The Beatles final performance at Candlestick Park is by far the best sounding of
all the audience tapes and is actually an enjoyable listen. Unfortunately, most fall into the category of
“for historical interest only”, but with the recent discovery of a previously unknown reel documenting the
eatles’ evening performance at Maple Leaf Gardens on August 17, 1966, we have a notable exception.

Hereafter referred to as “The Amos Tape.” This single 5” open reel is a 2 hour and 20 minute amateur
documentary, detailing one family’s experience at the final Beatles concert in Canada: Maple Leaf Gardens,
Toronto, Ont. August 17, 1966. Indeed detail is the operative word with this amazing tape. Sensing that a
Beatles concert had become something more than a venue for excessive screaming, our host and narrator
“Dad” decides to preserve the event via his professional level UHER reel-to-reel deck. The tape begins as
the listener is introduced to the family as they drive to Maple Leaf Gardens.

“Wednesday, the 17th of August 1966...” and the first 4 minutes or so are spent in the car with the family
discussing why they are going and what they think they will see. Interesting to note that “Mom” comments
that she expects to see The Beatles, not hear them! As the tape progresses, she provides the most succinct and occasionally prophetic observations. Frequent time and weather checks are given throughout the tape as well as descriptions of police presence

and general pre-concert atmosphere.

The ambient noise; crowds sounds, traffic, hawkers selling programs, lend an immediacy to the event not
found elsewhere among known Beatle audience tapes. Dad fills pre-concert downtime by interviewing
anyone at hand...fans, police and even the St. John’s Ambulance crew, describing nearly every step he takes
within the Maple Leaf Gardens. At about 6 minutes he’s found his seat and one can hear “Rubber Soul”
being played over the house PA. At about 9 minutes a stage announcer plugs “Toronto Sound”, an early
outdoor rock event featuring 14 Canadian bands. The announcement echoes through the unfilled arena.
Rubber Soul plays on as Dad and Mom describe the crowd slowly filling the Gardens, peppering their
observations with commentary ranging from long hair to the minimalist (complete lack of) stage props.
“Once the bloom is off the rose, you never get it back.” Dad warns Brian Epstein, later he admits that The
Beatles generate so much excitement, no additional stage show was needed. By 8:30 the arena is filling up
and at the 23 minute mark the host DJ makes his pre-show announcements and introduces The Remains.

Remains set: Hang On Sloopy (60 seconds) / Like a Rolling Stone (48 seconds) / Why Do I Cry (40 secs)
I’m A Man (appears to be complete 3 minutes). Barry & The Remains are Boston rock legends. Inspired by
seeing the Beatles on Ed Sullivan, four Boston University undergrads (Barry Tashian, Bill Briggs, Vern Miller &Chip Damiani) formed a rock unit that took The Hub by storm. In December of 1965, they scored an
appearance on Sullivan and followed it up by opening for the Beatles US ‘66 Tour. In addition to playing
their own set, they served as backing band for Bobby Hebb and The (Ronnie-less) Ronettes. On these
partial recordings the sheer volume of The Remains makes a powerful impression. A punky segment of
“Hang On Sloopy” gives way to an amped-up slice of “Like A Rolling Stone” (both tracks still in the
Remains set today) before the sole original of the set, a truncated “Why Do I Cry”. The song that survives
most intact is a cover of “I’m A Man”, revealing the band’s blues influences to be more Stones than Beatles.
Despite the cuts in the recording, Barry Tashian’s stage introductions are preserved before each song. At

The set comprises almost entirely of song segments from the “Sunny” album, one notable exception being
“Mojo Workout”, a staple of Hebb’s act during his New York City club dates with “Sylvia” (of “Mickey &
Sylvia” fame). According to Hebb himself the song was never recorded in studio, making this live version
its only known documentation. An extended and complete version of “Sunny” rounds out the set with
easily the most powerful performance and enthusiastic reception short of The Beatles. The sound quality
throughout the 11 minutes of Bobby Hebb’s section is easily the best of the music portions of The Amos
Tape. “How do you like the show so far?” asks the stage host at around the 45 minute mark. He continues
to vamp waiting for the next act, Brian Epstien’s only American group, The Cyrkle.

The Cyrkle set: Red Rubber Ball intro-Money (65 seconds) / Unknown (20 seconds) / I Get Around-This
Diamond Ring-Big Girls Don’t Cry-medley (2:35) / Turn Down Day (complete, 2:24) / Hushabye (complete
2:31) / Red Rubber Ball (complete 2:10) / Stay (complete 1:26). The folk-rocking Cyrkle were riding high off their huge, Paul Simon penned “Red Rubber Ball” single and it’s successful follow-up “Turn Down Day”, which had been released only this week. Sandwiched in between are a selection of covers revealing this underrated group’s influences. Teasing the enthusiastic crowd with the opening riff of “Red Rubber Ball”, the band launch into the Motown standard “Money”, then a track I can’t identify, and then an inventive medley of Beach Boys/Playboys/Four Seasons big hits. Perhaps the most beautiful of all is an ethereal reading of the Beach Boy’s “Hushabye”, complete with an “Our Prayer”-like acappella intro. Simply lovely! The monster hit “Red Rubber Ball” follows, and the set finishes with a heartfelt cover of Maurice Williams’ “Stay”. The Cyrkle got a great crowd reaction and they deserved it! At just over the 60 minute mark, the stage host welcomes The Remains return to the stage (to the audible displeasure of “Dad”) to back the “eye candy” for this evening’s male audience...The Ronettes. Sans Ronnie Spector (Phil wouldn’t allow her on this tour),

The Ronettes were the penultimate act of The Beatles ‘66 North American concerts. Nedra Tally and Estelle Bennett were joined by cousin Elaine for what turned out to be the final public appearances by this seminal girl group. Interesting to note, the Remains “rockier” instrumental underpining recalls the Pre-Spectorized sound of the Ronettes debut album on Colpix.

transfer than the previous acts. The phase issue (due to improper azimuth adjustment) seems more
pronounced as well...a pity because the Ronnie-less Ronettes handle their

"Sunny" has been recorded by, among others, Pat Martino & John Scofield with Joey Defrancesco, Boney M, Cher, Georgie Fame, Johnny Rivers, Stevie Wonder, Frank Sinatra with Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, the Electric Flag, The Four Seasons, the Four Tops, Wilson Pickett, Les McCann, Dusty Springfield, and The Alex Trio featuring David Wise. One cover, a disco version called "Sunny '76" was a hit for Hebb in that year.

Bobby Hebb recorded "Sunny" in New York City, which resulted in a tour with The Beatles for Hebb. It is one of the most covered popular songs, with hundreds of versions released.

This video was recorded March 2008 in Davis, California. At about 2:40 in the video you should notice a profound change in the rhythm and style of playing. I hope you enjoy it and thank you kindly for your positive comments.

The presenter was none other than James "Jimmy" Church who played with
Bobby in Mr. Church's group, The Five Seniors - later changing their name to the
High Fives and being formally produced by the honorable Hoss Allen from WLAC!

A RESOLUTION to honor and commend Bobby Hebb for his
contributions to the world of music.

WHEREAS, Tennessee has long been known throughout the world for its rich music heritage; from the hills of East Tennessee through Music City U.S.A. to the shores of the Mississippi, the talented musicians of this State have earned a reputation that is unsurpassed in the history of American music; and

WHEREAS, one such legendary musical talent is Bobby Hebb, a Nashville native, who achieved fame for the composition and performance of his 1966 chart topping hit, Sunny, which earned gold record status; and

WHEREAS, born on June 26, 1938, to William Marion Hebb and Ovalla Merriweather Hebb, the esteemed Bobby Hebb has been involved in the music business his whole life; and

WHEREAS, on his third birthday, Mr. Hebb made his professional debut as a tap dancer at the Bijou Theater in Nashville; he also lent his talents to a tap dancing trio called the Typewriter Brothers; and

WHEREAS, also in 1941, he joined the Jerry Jackson Revue, an all-black troupe that traveled through the South and the southern sections of the Midwest, appearing on theater stages and under carnival tents in front of racially mixed audiences; and

WHEREAS, Bobby Hebb joined the band at Carter Lawrence Elementary School in
Nashville where he learned the euphonium and studied many brass instruments under the tutelage of John Cecil Reed; and

WHEREAS, his innumerable talents at such a young age garnered him a place on Owen Bradley’s Nashville television show as part of the Owen Bradley orchestra;
and

WHEREAS, he was soon asked to join Roy Acuff’s Smoky Mountain Boys, where he
successfully demonstrated his singing, dancing, and spoon playing talents; and

WHEREAS, throughout Mr. Hebb’s illustrious tenure with the Smoky Mountain Boys, the group performed regularly on the Grand Ole Opry’s radio program and on Mr. Acuff’s own Opry Matinee television show; in addition, the artists headlined at Dunbar Cave in Clarksville and performed at the Astor Roof at the Astoria in New York; and

WHEREAS, as one of the pioneering African-Americans who appeared at the Grand Ole Opry, Mr. Hebb honors those spirited artists who broke the color line, such as DeFord Bailey and Pee Wee Marquette; and

WHEREAS, a driven artist, Bobby Hebb performed spoons on several Papa John Gordy 78’s released on Bullet Records, the oldest independent Nashville label, and on Bo Diddley’s Diddley Daddy at Chess recording studio; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hebb eventually enlisted in the United States Navy which allowed him to play the trumpet and improve his guitar skills; on board a Navy ship, he played trumpet in a jazz band called the USS Pine Island Pirates and landed regular engagements at the Great Shanghai, a cabaret in Hong Kong; and

WHEREAS, upon completing his tour of duty, Bobby Hebb returned to Nashville where he commenced playing rhythm and blues and jazz with various bands; he played guitar and sang baritone for the Hi-Fi’s, wrote You’re the Only Girl For Me, performed guitar behind the Fairfield Four, and ably worked as a session guitarist on other artists’ recordings; and

WHEREAS, in 1958, he played guitar on a session for Roscoe Shelton that produced the Excello single, Something’s Wrong; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hebb juggled a full schedule when he joined Kid King Combo, during which the group entertained audiences at clubs, did sessions for other performers, and recorded their own Excello material; he also played guitar for Excello rhythm and blues performers Earl Gaines and Larry Birdsong; and

WHEREAS, at the end of the 1950s, Bobby Hebb cut his first solo single for Rich
Records, giving the country song Night Train to Memphis a rhythm and blues treatment; he went on to record I Found Somebody in 1961, and traveled to New York City to perform at Blue Morocco where he fronted a house band and delivered such a hot mix of rhythm and blues that he earned the nickname Bobby “Mojo” Hebb; and

WHEREAS, with only a guitar and a microphone, Bobby Hebb showcased his diverse talents at several clubs in New York City during the folk music era; he shaped his stage routine by studying comic Pinkney Roberts and story-teller Bill Cosby; and

WHEREAS, penned Song-A-Day man, Mr. Hebb became a prolific songwriter, often
writing five or six songs in one day, including Cold Cold Nights, Betty Lou from Ohio, Sam Hall, Jr., and I Love Mary; and

WHEREAS, the single, Sunny, a quintessential pop-rock-soul-jazz crossover hit,
propelled Bobby Hebb to instant celebrity status as the song peaked at number two in Billboard and at number one in Cash Box; that same year he joined the Beatles’ 1966 American tour; and

WHEREAS, Bobby Hebb co-wrote A Natural Man with Sandy Baron, which Lou Rawls took to the top twenty in 1971; and

WHEREAS, the following year, he chalked up a surprise hit with Love, Love, Love, a song from the Sunny album, which climbed to number thirty-two on the British singles charts and set the stage for Mr. Hebb’s second tour of England; and

WHEREAS, during the 1970s, Bobby Hebb recorded the single, Evil Woman/Judy on his own Crystal Ball Records, recorded for Laurie Records, and wrote Proud Soul Heritage; and WHEREAS, today, Mr. Hebb records his own songs at Orpheus Productions in Massachusetts and continues to compose, adding to a formidable song total that numbers in the thousands; and

WHEREAS, in addition, he works on the educational children’s television series Alligator Lou and has appeared in an episode of NBC-TV’s Unsolved Mysteries; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting that we pause in our deliberations to join in celebrating the
numerous contributions Bobby Hebb has made to the music industry; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIFTH GENERAL

The legendary Bobby Hebb is in Europe - performing 11 dates starting next week. Bobby Hebb toured with THE BEATLES in 1966 when his song "Sunny" was on radio all across the land. "A Satisfied Mind" was also a Billboard Top 40 hit forMr. Hebb in 1966.
Bobby co-wrote Lou Rawls' Grammy winning song "A Natural Man". "Love Love Love" from the "Sunny"album hit the Top 40 in the U.K. in 1972. Meanwhile,his Gamble & Huff single, "You Want To Change Me", keeps selling for ridiculous prices on the internet,especially eBay.com. Bobby is most likely adding that song to the set.

Mr. Hebb is touring Europe to support his new album on Tuition, "That's All I Wanna Know".

„Sunny“ und Bobby Hebb. Ein Song, ein Mann. Ein Überhit. Im Oktober 2005 hat Bobby Hebb im Laufe seiner vierzigjährigen Karriere erst sein drittes Album ("That's All I Wanna Know") veröffentlicht. Im Rahmen einer Europatournee stellt er es mit einer fünfköpfigen Band im frannz Club vor.

Der Song „Sunny“ steht heute auf der Top 20-Liste der meist gespielten Titel im 20. Jahrhundert und gilt als meist gecoverter Song überhaupt. Etwa 400 mal wurde das Lied mehr oder weniger neu interpretiert. Dabei zählt die unglaublich groovige Version von James Brown im Duett mit Marva Whitney zu den besten. Aber Bobby Hebb nur auf diesen einen Song zu reduzieren, ist eine Fehleinschätzung. Sein zweites Album „Love Games“, 1970 erschienen, enthält ausschließlich seine eigenen Songs und gilt wegweisend für den urbanen R´n´B. Ein dunkles, schönes Werk, dass vieles von Marvin Gaye´s „What´s Going On“, von Barry White oder Gamble & Huff vorweg nahm. Ein kommerzieller Erfolg wurde es allerdings nicht.

"That's All I Wanna Know" präsentiert nicht den neuen Megahit. Es sind ausschließlich ältere Titel versammelt, so auch „Sunny“ gesungen im Duett mit Astrid North, und wirkt wie eine Klangreise durch das Schaffen Bobby Hebbs. Das besteht aus weitaus mehr Songs, als seine Soloalben enthalten. Es werden wiederum einige hundert sein, die er in den letzten Jahrzehnten - auch für viele andere Künstler wie Lou Rawls - geschrieben hat.

Die „neuen“ alten Kompositionen werden im Hier und Jetzt verwurzelt und haben doch nichts von ihrem Charme und Feeling eingebüßt. Die Zusammenstellung unterstreicht Hebbs besondere Qualitäten als Songwriter und Performer. Jazzige Vokalnummern wie „A Satisfied Mind“ und vom Motownsound geprägter Soul - „When Love Goes Wrong“ ist beispielsweise ein lässig groovender Soulstomper mit absoluter Clubtauglichkeit – wechseln sich ab und verbreiten Vitalität und Gelassenheit.

Mit 66 Jahren noch voller Tatendrang - auf diese Art beschreibt Bobby Hebb sich selbst. Als Sohn einer musikalischen Familie 1939 in Nashville geboren, stand er bereits mit 3 Jahren als Stepptänzer in der "Jerry Jackson Revue" auf der großen Bühne.
Die ersten Gehversuchen im Modern Jazz tat Bobby Hebb 1955 in seiner Zeit bei der Navy. Wieder Zuhause angekommen musste er einen schlimmen Schicksalsschlag erleiden. Einen Tag nach John F. Kennedys Ermordung 1963 wurde sein Bruder Harold bei einem Streit vor dem Baron Club ermordet. Unter den Eindrücken dieser Ereignisse schrieb er "Sunny" - einen so schönen, simplen, melancholischen wie auch Hoffnung machenden Titel. DER Erfolgstitel überhaupt.
Zunächst ließ dieser Erfolg etwas auf sich warten, "Sunny" kletterte erst 1966 in den US Charts auf Platz 2 und in den UK Charts auf Platz 12. Bobby Hebb blieb der Musik immer treu und ist nun mit seinem aktuellen Album "That`s All I Wanna Know" auf einer einmaligen Klangreise unterwegs.

Bobby Hebb wurde am 26. Juli 1938 in Nashville, Tennessee geboren.
Mit 12 Jahren war er der erste Schwarze, der in der Grand Ole Opry auftreten durfte. Angeheuert von Roy Acuff, sang er mit den Smoky Mountain Boys.

Gitarre lernte er bei Chet Atkins und Hank Garland, Songwriting-Tipps gab’s von Hank Williams Sr.

An international star of the musical scene just personally visited Hans Sikorski Music Publishers in Hamburg. Bobby Hebb, the composer and first interpreter of the hit "Sunny," is on a promotional tour, for his indestructible evergreen is still in demand.

Already two years ago the first CD with the original by Bobby Hebb and 15 cover versions was issued by Trocadero (CD 10532; Distribution: Indigo). Now Trocadero is releasing a further 17 cover versions of "Sunny." The new CD (CD 12812; Distribution: Indigo) will be coming out on 13 May, and shortly thereafter Bobby Hebb will be appearing live in several German cities:

With "Sunny" the group Boney M. made its definitive breakthrough in the 1970s, reaching No. 1 in the German charts in 1976. There is hardly anyone who doesn't know the "Sunny" refrain line "Sunny, yesterday my life was filled with rain..." It is famous far beyond the jazz and soul scene - which is actually the musical homeland of the Nashville-born Bobby Hebb. The song is on the list of the 20th century's most played titles and has been interpreted well over one hundred times by renowned artists such as Cher, Georgie Fame, Wilson Pickett, Chris Montez, Ella Fitzgerald, Shirley Bassey and many others. And this is exactly what makes this song so attractive.

Bobby Hebb was born in Nashville, Tennessee on 26 July 1938 and at the age of 12 played in the Grand Ole Opry as the first Black musician. He sang with the Smoky Mountain Boys - hired by none other than Roy Acuff.

Bobby Hebb wrote "Sunny" whilst under the impression of the murders of John F. Kennedy and of his own brother Harold one day later. It is a "beautiful, simple, melancholy and hope-making title," as R�diger Ladwig once formulated. In 1966 the single reached its highest placing as No. 2 on the US Billboard Charts.

That's only 25 % of the material composed by the singer/songwriter. If you consider that he made his stage debut on his third birthday, tapdancing on July 26, 1941, and that his first appearance on record was alsoas a tap dancer for pianist Poppa John Gordy on the Bullet label's "WayDown South", circa 1950 (when he was around twelve years of age), it is atragedy that this magical album is but Bobby Hebb's first.With the assassination of John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963 came adouble tragedy for Bobby. His brother Hal, also a recording artist, was avictim of a fatal mugging the day after Kennedy's passing. Immersinghimself in Gerald Wilson's jazz masterpiece "You Better Believe It" in thedays following those tragic events no doubt inspired Bobby to compose hismasterpiece. The song landed on the Country, Rhythm & Blues and Popcharts. Recorded early on by Brother Jack McDuff and David Newman, jazzgreats Stan Kenton, Herbie Mann, Ella Fitzgerald, Pat Martino and manyothers have made it a standard in that genre. Having hit for Cher as wellas Georgey Fame, the high point in regard to covers so far would have tobe Duke Ellington and Frank Sinatra's beautiful rendition.Yambu did a disco version, as did Bobby Hebb when Joe Renzetti producedand arranged a dance rendition of "Sunny" for Laurie Records. Boney M andThe Boogie Pimps have also taken the composition back into the publicconsciousness.Originally "Sunny" was test marketed in Japan. A little known fact isthat it first hit for Mieko Hirota - the "Connie Francis" of Japan. "Sunny" hit for "Miko" (her nickname) before it became an internationalsmash for its author, Bobby having sent sheet music and a recording toJapan to see how the song would fare there. Hebb only heard that versionin 2004 when magazine editor Takashi Okutaki sent a copy to America. DavePike also released it before Bobby's version became the most famousrendition. Pike's jazz instrumental from 1965 is found on his Atlantic lp"Jazz For The Jet Set".Few compositions can claim to have covers by such a diverse crew as FrankiValli, Star Trek stars William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, film greatRobert Mitchum, the stunning interpretation by Dusty Springfield, MarvinGaye's amazing take on the tune, Shirley Bassey, Jose Feliciano, JohnnyMathis, the brilliant blues group The Electric Flag, even James Brown puthis voice to the majestic melody. It appears in many a film score, is akaraoke favorite (with tons of instrumental versions appearing all overeBay), and in a weird twist of fate, becomes the name of the maincharacter in the film "Jackpot", where a fellow aspires to be a Karaokesuperstar, with Hebb's "Sunny" as part of the film soundtrack!The original Jerry Ross production and Joe Renzetti arrangement featuresMelba Moore, Nicholas Ashford and Valerie Simpson on vocals - three namesthat blend their talents superbly behind Bobby Hebb's perfect phrasing.So here it is for America again, at last, the first of only two albumsreleased by Bobby Hebb (who has recorded at least a dozen albums, many ofwhich are being prepared for release only now). Songwriter set to depart Rockport

'Dolce" is Italian for ''sweet," but the ambience in Gloucester's Caffe Dolce was anything but one recent Monday morning. As a dozen men in blue-collar garb shouted hoarsely back and forth in Italian, Rockport's Bobby Hebb strained to be heard above the din.

''If I was going to write this . . . this scene, this disposition we're in at this particular moment, could never be 'Sunny,' " said Hebb, referring to the signature tune he wrote 38 years ago about one's state of mind or ''disposition." It was a song that rocked the pop, country, and R&B charts the summer of 1966, topping Cash Box magazine's ranking and making it to Billboard's No. 2.

A neat, trim man with a quiet demeanor, Hebb appeared a little out of place amid the coffee shop's hubbub, but he acted right at home -- drinking in the scene along with his cappuccino, and musing about how he might write it up as a song or the setting for a musical.

Those who know him say Hebb is rarely out of place anywhere. Moving nimbly among diverse musical styles from classical and jazz to R&B, pop, and country and skilled on an array of instruments from guitar and cello to spoons, Hebb toured with the Beatles, played a private gig for the late Taiwan leader Chiang Kai-shek and his wife, and was the third black performer ever to appear at the Grand Ole Opry when he debuted with country legend Roy Acuff as a pre-teen in 1952.

According to Fred Boucher, who owns the Blacksmith Shop, a restaurant in Hebb's neighborhood, ''He's basically been a mover and shaker all his life."
Hebb's life will be celebrated later this month as part of a new Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum exhibit. Hebb plans to travel to his native Nashville for the March 27 opening of ''Night Train to Nashville: Music City Rhythm & Blues 1945-1970," where he'll speak on a panel about the ''intersections between R&B and country music." It is something that ''Bobby's career typifies," said Hall of Fame spokesman Michael Gray.

The exhibit will feature the tweed jacket Hebb wore on the 1966 Beatles tour, antique spoons he played at the Grand Ole Opry, the original ''Sunny" sheet music, and photos of Hebb and his family -- a musically gifted clan headed by gospel musician parents.
Gray said an accompanying two-CD set includes Hebb's recording of ''Sunny" -- a song that has since been covered by Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Cher, and myriad others. Hebb said he stopped counting after 500 recordings.

'' 'Sunny' is one of the most recorded songs in US pop music history. That song broke on three different genres and now it's also a jazz standard and there's also been a disco hit," said Joe Viglione, a Medford music writer and video producer who has followed Hebb's career and calls him ''a musical chameleon."
While Hebb's prolific composing in younger days earned him the nickname ''song-a-day man," he said he was really writing several daily. Hebb scored a second triumph on the charts in 1971 when he cowrote the Lou Rawls hit, ''A Natural Man." While his other songs didn't gather anything close to the acclaim of ''Sunny," Hebb recorded many -- relying on live audiences to advise him on which songs to keep or discard from the repertoire.

A remake of the original ''Sunny" album is in the works and Hebb said he hopes it will be released by July 26, when he turns 66 -- a number matching the year ''Sunny" hit the airwaves.

''If I get three or four [songs] a week now, I'm happy. The song I wrote this morning was called 'Power Play,' " he said, describing his newest composition as an experiment in harmonies on guitar.
Besides songwriting, Hebb said he is working on a television special and a musical comedy. And, while show contracts aren't yet in hand, Hebb said he might tour New England in coming months. Last summer, he played a classic hits show in Lynn, and appeared at Emerson Inn by the Sea in Rockport. He also did a concert tour last year in Germany, and in Japan in 2002.

''I feel like I'm 25," he said.

For younger musicians, Hebb is an inspiration.
''In terms of a musical mentor, he's one of the best," said Plum Island keyboardist, composer, and producer Eric Goldberg, who worked with Hebb in the 1990s.

''To perform with him, the way he gets the crowd going, is just incredible. The range -- he goes from old standards [such as] 'Body & Soul,' and he'll jump from something like that to something like 'That's the Way I Like It,' and then do the spoons thing right after that. He has the energy of an 18-year-old."

Both Goldberg and Rockport guitarist Peter Fedele, who works with Hebb's nephew, bass player Thomas Hebb, spoke of Hebb's deep knowledge of music technique and theory.

''Whenever I get him to sit in, it's always a good thing. It's like a lesson for me. It's cool he's still writing great stuff," said Fedele, who has played Hebb's tunes during a weekly gig at Gloucester's Blackburn Tavern. ''I admire him for the fact that he's still doing it, which, in this business, is a tough thing."

After living 30 years in Rockport, Manchester-by-the-Sea, and Salem, Hebb is preparing to move back to Nashville to be near his four sisters. Although he bought a home in Nashville, ''I won't be leaving 100 percent," said Hebb, whose daughter lives in Methuen. He said his music publishing and production business, Bobby Hebb Productions -- and a piece of his heart -- will stay in Rockport.
''I learned a lot more and experienced things by being here," he said. ''This is what I was looking for."
