Signed Iconic Beatles Album Auctioned for $290,500

A copy of The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album autographed by all four band members has shattered expectations at auction.

The iconic album was sold Saturday for $290,500 by Heritage Auctions in Dallas. It had been listed at $30,000 before the sale. The winning bidder was not identified, but The Associated Press reported the rare item had been sold to a person in the Midwest.

The autographs of the band members were obtained in 1967, the same year the record was issued, according to a letter of authenticity posted on Heritage Auctions' website.

Bobby Hebb's THAT'S ALL I WANNA KNOW, recorded at the time (the week of the start) of the Iraq War

TENTH ANNIVERSARY FOR THE RECORDING OF

                   "That's All I Wanna Know"

As you know, we at Bobby Hebb.com don't get involved with politics on this site.  The exception is that when Bobby flew over to Germany to record "That's All I Wanna Know" it was the same week as the Iraq war...and this album almost did not get recorded because of the threat of war.

Producer  Rüdiger Ladwig put together the deal with Tuition Records and the CD would issue in Europe (on Tuition) and America (on Allegro) in 2005.
    ___________________________________________________

I started working on the liner notes to That's All I Wanna Know when Andreas Schaffer, the A & R / Label manager at Intuition /  tuition records, a division of Schott Music & Media GmbH  contacted me on Monday, August 1, 2005 to give me the green light on writing those notes.

You can read those liner notes here:
    http://www.tuition-music.com/bobby-hebb.html

The album arrived at Tuition Records offices on
    September 7, 2005.

The Iraq War began 10 years ago today. (March 19, 2003)

MoveOn members helped fuel the most significant antiwar movement in 30 years before the invasion began. We saw through the deception and refused to buy the warmongering that the Bush administration was selling.

    SOULWALKING STORY ON BOBBY HEBB

    Bobby Hebb
    b. Robert Von Hebb, 26th July 1938, Nashville, Tennessee, U.S.A.
    d. 3rd August 2010, Centennial Medical Center, Nashville, Tennessee, U.S.A.

The singer, Bobby Hebb, who is probably best remembered for his Sixties hit song 'Sunny', has died. He was 72.
Bobby had been suffering from a long battle with lung cancer, and died at the Centennial Medical Center, in Patterson Street, in Nashville.

Bobby was born in Nashville to two parents, William and Ovalla Hebb, who were both blind.

He joined the Navy in 1955, played the trumpet in a jazz band, and later played and danced with Roy Acuff's country band, the Smoky Mountain Boys.

He was one of the first black musicians to perform on the Grand Ole Opry show in Nashville, and sang background vocals on Bo Diddley's tune 'Diddley Daddy'.
    SunnyBeatles
    sunny - 1966 / bobby with the beatles - 1966
'Sunny' was a song covered my many other artists, including Georgie Fame, Boney M, Cher, Johnny Rivers, Stevie Wonder, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, The Four Seasons, The Four Tops, James Brown, Les McCann, Wes Montgomery, Dusty Springfield, Nancy Wilson, Classics IV, Marvin Gaye, Jose Feliciano, Earl Grant, Jimmy Smith, Mary Wells, Johnny Mathis, Chris Montez, Oscar Peterson, War, Dave Pike, Wilson Pickett, Musiq Soulchild, and even Leonard Nimoy (Spock from Star Trek), amongst many others.

Bobby often told the media that 'Sunny' was a response to the killing of his brother (Harold Hebb) outside a Nashville nightclub along with the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which occured a few days prior to the incident.
When the song was a hit, it led to a touring schedule with the Beatles at the time.

Bobby penned songs for other artists including Lou Rawls, who received a Grammy for the song 'A Natural Man', which was penned by Bobby and Sandy Baron.

As an artist in his own right, Bobby had hits with 'A Satisfied Mind' in 1966 and 'Love Me' in 1967.
Love GamesThat's All I Wanna Know
    love games - 1970 / that's all i wanna know - 2005

He released a couple of albums, including 'Love Games' in 1970, and 'That's All I Wanna Know' some 35 years later.
More recently Bobby had his own publishing company and label called Hebb Cats, and still continued to write music, touring in Japan in 2008.

Bobby is survived by a daughter and four sisters.

    KOJO NNAMDI

    13:14:48
800-433-8850 is the number to call if you have questions or comments for Stephen Wade. He's a musician, author and recording artist. His most recent book is titled "The Beautiful Music All Around Us: Field Recordings and the American Experience." His most recent album is called "Banjo Diary: Lessons From Tradition." It was nominated for a Grammy. A lot of people remember the Nashville musician Bobby Hebb as the guy behind the tune "Sunny." Beautiful tune. You found that his eventual career was one that had a lot to do with street musicians in his hometown, like the Washboard Band. Why is he, why is Bobby Hebb an important part of this story too?

    WADE

    13:15:27
Oh, he was great. I talked to him. He had been -- his parents were blind, and they had – they were, in that time, you know, that's just the way that -- there was no state support. They had to make a living. They made a living on the streets. They had what he told me was Hebb's Kitchen Cabinet Orchestra, and it was he and his brothers and sisters and his parents. And they went out and they played on the streets of Nashville, and he told me that it showed him that he, you know, he learned how to play at that time.

    WADE

    13:15:55
He would sing and dance and played the spoons with them. And then that led to his going on the Grand Ole Opry. He was the second African American that -- he was on that show. He played with Roy Acuff, and he was in Roy Acuff's Jug Band, which was a offshoot band that Acuff had that stemmed from his own medicine show days. And Bobby had told me how important it was to him to have that experience. And then after that, he left -- this is the mid '50s -- he left and went to Chicago, played with Bo Diddley, and went on with his career.

    WADE

    13:16:32
But he said, again, this interconnectedness thing, he said we would listen to Walter Winchell, you know, at night, but we'd listen to bluegrass in the morning, or one or the other. He was hearing all kinds of things that were being processed and brought into his musical vocabulary, and that's what, always his story -- this is a person who, you know, he's an opening act for the Beatles on their last tour or America, he helps write "Natural Man" for Lou Rawls. He writes "Sunny" for his late brother.

    WADE

    13:17:01
And yet, to him, the whole washboard and street music experience in Nashville was really important. So for me, he was a witness, and able to explain what, more about the lives of the Nashville Washboard Band. And so I sought him out. I'm sorry he's passed away.

    NNAMDI

    13:17:20
    He passed away in 2010.

    WADE

    13:17:21
    Yeah. I...

    NNAMDI

    13:17:23
And I'm so glad, though, I'm sorry he passed away, but I am so glad that you had the opportunity to speak with him before that time, so that he can become a living, breathing part.

    WADE

    13:17:32
I talked to over 200 people in the course of my book. About 100 are in the book, and so many have passed on. The best part of my work nowadays, Kojo, is going back to the communities where I did my research and presenting this book, doing presentations with this book in those places. And the people whose lives have been the most devastated, whose stories are the roughest in this book are the ones who are most happy to have those stories out. It's not with embarrassment, it's with understanding and expressing their kin with a heightened sense of who they really were. And so that's been so meaningful to me, through this time.

    Overview

The Beautiful Music All Around Us presents the extraordinarily rich backstories of thirteen performances captured on Library of Congress field recordings between 1934 and 1942 in locations reaching from Southern Appalachia to the Mississippi Delta and the Great Plains. Including the children's play song "Shortenin' Bread," the fiddle tune "Bonaparte's Retreat," the blues "Another Man Done Gone," and the spiritual "Ain't No Grave Can Hold My Body Down," these performances were recorded in kitchens and .

    Dear Joe,

Thank you and Mr. Hebb so much for this illuminating and
amazing conversation. Just moments ago we concluded, and
I'm awash in the power of his words and perceptions. What a wonderful
person. He's helped this stranger so much in better understanding those
times and coming to know his own experiences. He also granted me the
opportunity to follow up with another call should need arise.

I'm enormously grateful to you both, and will be
    writing to you tomorrow.

    Bless you!

Peter Cooper On Music: Bluesman ‘Nick’ Nixon ages like fine wine

On his way to becoming one of Nashville’s most consequential blues and R&B singers, James “Nick” Nixon had it hard.

“I sang in church, then went into opera,” he says. “I had a high school choir director named William Lathon, who was a famous opera singer, and he trained me. The hardest thing I’ve ever done is to learn how not to sing so well, so I could do rock ’n’ roll and blues.”

Nixon has books filled with photos of times spent with Moore, B.B. King, Lazy Lester, Rufus Thomas, Bobby Hebb, Cootie Stark, cousin (and queen of Nashville blues) Marion James and others, but ask him for a career highlight and he’ll tell you about the time he had to visit someone in a hospital.
